A personal journey

Hi, I’m Juliana, and This Is My Story

Travel has always been a big part of my life, but there is one place that continues to draw me back — San Fele, a small village in Basilicata in Southern Italy.

My heritage comes from two very different parts of Europe. My mother was Italian, from San Fele, and my father was Croatian. Growing up in Australia with those two European backgrounds has always been part of who I am.

I first travelled to San Fele in 1990, in my twenties, searching for family and discovering a place that until then I had known mostly through my mother’s stories.

More than 30 years later, I returned.

This time I saw it differently. I began to understand not only where my family came from, but how our heritage, traditions and family stories travel across generations and continue to shape us.

Inspiring Travels grew from that journey.

Through this site, I want to share the places, people and stories I’ve discovered — beginning in Southern Italy, but also exploring the wider idea of heritage travel and what it means to discover where you came from.

Discovering my Family History

My interest in genealogy began with the stories my parents told me, old family photographs and a growing curiosity about where we came from.

Before returning to Italy, I joined Ancestry and began researching my mother’s family. I was amazed by what I found. I could trace generations of my family in and around San Fele back to the 1700s — and potentially even further. To discover that my family had lived in this small part of Southern Italy for centuries absolutely fascinated me.

Researching my Croatian heritage has been more challenging. Borders have changed, countries have changed and many records are much harder to find. That part of my family story is still something I’m discovering.

And perhaps that’s what I love about genealogy — there is always another story waiting to be found.

My Journey to San Fele

In 1990, in my twenties, I travelled from Australia to San Fele to meet the family who still lived in the farmhouse where my mother had grown up.

More than 30 years later, I returned. The family was older, I was older, and I saw this little part of Southern Italy through completely different eyes.

That return changed the way I thought about family, heritage and travel — and became part of the inspiration for Inspiring Travels.

Family roots

Basilicata

My journey here began in San Fele, my mother’s village. The first visit in 1990 connected names and stories with real people and places. Returning years later gave me more time to listen, explore and see beyond the familiar stops.

With Bari as a base, I visited Monopoli, Alberobello, Ostuni and Otranto. I’m gathering the details that stayed with me from those towns, the coast and the countryside.
